Protect Your DNA Part 4

While attending an event a few days ago, I received a mental download from the Holy Spirit. He told me to consider whether the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was a genetically modified organism (GMO).

Prior to the sin of Adam and Eve they walked freely and communed with the God in the Garden of Eden. Interestingly, they were given explicit instructions by God to avoid eating from a specific tree, “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die” (Genesis 2:17).

If they consumed fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, then they would die. We know that their death must have been a spiritual death because they continued to live physically.

How could they die spiritually? Our DNA is our spiritual connection to God. The Bible notes that we are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). God is a spiritual being, therefore, our connection to him is through the blueprint of his image which is contained in our genetic code. Death occurred spiritually because their spiritual connection through to God was severed.

How could eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil cause spiritual death?

A plausible explanation is that the tree of knowledge of good and evil contained genetically modified organisms. We know that Satan dwelled in the garden and tempted Eve to eat fruit from the tree:

Gen. 3:1–7; Gen 3:12–13

Now the Serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea has God said you shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, You shall not surely die: 5 For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 12 And the man said, the woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, the serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

What we see from the passage is:

  • The tree was good for food, suggesting that it was productive (a high yield of fruit). One of the benefits of GMO-produced food is that a higher yield can occur.
  • The fruit would lead to death if eaten or touched. The research is clear, GMO-consumed food and supplements lead to death.1 Of note, touching some GMO produced produce has led to serious adverse events. This is thought to be due to artificially (genetically altered) increased production of natural or artificial pesticides or herbicides which are present in abnormally high amounts that cause damage to human tissue upon contact.
  • The fruit was pleasing to the eye – it looked good. One can assume it was without any blemishes. GMOs are engineered to be pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately, they are devoid of any meaningful nutrition.
  • Upon eating the fruit your eyes shall be opened. This sounds like dilated pupils from an allegic reaction. GMOs are known to cause allergic reactions because the proteins are recognized as foreigners and are subsequently aggressively attacked by our immune system. Yes, I am aware of spiritual opening of the eyes, but as a physician, the physical reaction seems obvious.
  • There is deception present. The food manufacturing industry wants us to believe that these foods are safe. Don’t be fooled. These foods can kill and maim.2,3

I believe that Satan corrupted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Jesus, revealed an example of a corrupted plant when he cursed the fig tree for not bearing any fruit (Matt 21:19).

Because God is incorruptible He could not corrupt the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. However, Satan certainly can do that and God allowed it to happen. It is through God’s love for us that He gives us a choice, specifically the liberty to choose between good and evil. Otherwise, without the freedom of choice we would simply be automatons (robotic-like creatures), never truly knowing how much God loves us. With liberty and freedom, evil must exist.

It is our job as Christians to recognize that the enemy’s goal is to destroy our DNA and this has been an ongoing battle since creation. Our job is to resist the devil and protect our DNA by exposing and avoiding GMO foods as much as possible.

Protect Your DNA Part 3 (GMO, Oh No!)

Attacks to corrupt and destroy our DNA are not new. We can look to the Bible for the origin of this epic battle. Soon after the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, God declared, “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15).

Satan’s (thee) response to God’s declaration was observed by John in the Book of Revelation, “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ (Rev 12:17). Satan declares war on the woman and remnant of her seed (Jesus Christ and his fellow believers). His primary goal is to attempt to prevent the return of Jesus Christ by corrupting the seed (genes of the woman).

The aforementioned passages allow us to understand that we should not be surprised that food manufacturers bring substances to the marketplace that are clearly not of God. GMOs are just one example of the many strategies that Satan uses to attempt to destroy and corrupt us. Fortunately, we are aware and can do something about it.

What is a genetically modified organism?

GMO means genetically modified organisms which include food that has been genetically manipulated or altered from its original design.

What are the 3 most common food sources of GMOs?

Many of us are unaware that GMOs are everywhere. It is estimated that 75-90% of all items sold in the grocery store are GMOs. The three most common GMO food items are corn, soy, and sugar (from sugar beets). You may think that you do not eat much of the three items, but think again.

Corn is in almost everything, including vegetable oils (not good for you anyway!), snack chips, popcorn, etc. Most vegetable cooking oil contains soy which is very harmful in-and-of itself. The wide consumption of sugar does not need any further explanation.

The food manufacturing industry has been modifying and splicing genes of plants to increase profit by increasing the yield and to produce plants that have the ability to be ultra-resistant to herbicides and pesticides.

The problem is that the general public is not aware that animal studies have shown that the GMO foods cause serious harm to those animals that ingest them. The food manufacturing companies would like us to believe that these foods are “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS). In fact, in 1994 GMOs were approved for mass production and consumption by the Food and Drug Association (FDA).

The animal studies that are cited by the food manufacturing companies only use rats that were tested for 3 months during which time there were not any observable significant adverse events. However, they fail to publish the studies that extend the observation period beyond 3 months, specifically three months and beyond tell a different story.1 Upon observation of rats exposed to GMO foods longer than 9 months, they developed problems such as cancer (breast cancer was particularly prominent), liver and kidney damage, immune system compromise, accelerated aging, and infertility to name a few of the adverse events.

Does the Bible have something to say about GMOs? God said, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so” (Genesis 1:11). Unfortunately, the scientists working for the food manufacturing companies have not taken heed to God’s Words. Genes from plants of different kinds are routinely added to genes from other species and ultimately sold to us in the grocery store as edible and safe.

It is very clear that we should not take the genes of one organism and insert them into the genes of another organism. Upon ingestion of these genetically modified organisms, our body does not recognize these foods as nutritious, thereby yielding a toxic response. Toxic overload is the result of overconsumption of these poisons which leads to many disease states, especially cancer, degenerative diseases such as heart, lung, liver, and kidney, and food allergies.

What are some basic tips to minimize our exposure to GMO foods?

  1. Eat organic food as much as possible.
  2. Develop a habit of reading food labels carefully.
  3. Check the labels of produce; look for the number 9 to be the first number on the stickers which indicate that it is organic.
  4. Absence of number 9 usually means it is grown traditionally which usually assures that it was grown using pesticides, herbicides, and GMOs.
  5. Shop at farmer’s markets when possible and ask the farmers what they use to grow their produce.
  6. Grow your own food when possible

Protect Your DNA Part 2

In part one I noted that DNA is composed of both spiritual and physical material. Proper nutrition, a sound diet, and a nourishing environment all contribute to the expression of “good” genes. The expression of genes by our diet and environment is called epigenetics.

In the previous post I highlighted a few nutrients which play important roles in correcting and protecting our DNA, specifically vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, and B-vitamins.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that has numerous beneficial effects in the body. Most Americans have very low magnesium blood levels. When doctors check a magnesium level, they typically check the level in the serum (blood), not the tissue level which reflects the true level of magnesium. One of the most important effects is that it is a calming mineral. Those who have anxiety or “over-excitability” would be well-served to consider increasing the magnesium content in their diet and supplementing with a quality form of magnesium.

Magnesium protects DNA by binding to DNA , thereby stabilizing the double helix structure by reducing the negatively charged density. It is interesting to note that DNA is a “charged particle” which means that it contains energy. Of note, it receives, transmits, and stores energy. Magnesium acts as a scaffold for the double helix DNA structure, keeping the form of the DNA molecule intact so that it can function properly when there is damage. Magnesium also protects DNA by scavenging free-radicals which cause tissue damage and through its anti-inflammatory effects.

Zinc

Zinc is another mineral that is very important for DNA repair and damage control. Zinc is stored in several areas, but most importantly it is stored in the prostate gland in males. Of note, when conception occurs the there is much replication of DNA via growth and development of the living baby. We need plenty of zinc present to repair any defects in the DNA during rapid growth and development.

Genetic defects are simple nutritional deficiencies that leave a “fingerprint” on a specific gene, in a specific location, on a specific chromosome. Zinc functions like a good detective; it finds these fingerprints and corrects the defects.

A good example of zinc deficiency and genes is Down’s syndrome. It occurs very early in conception. Think of a factory line with defective body parts that are supplied to the line early in the production process. Yes, there is a chromosomal defect (trisomy) as traditional doctors note, but the defect is due to lack of zinc which has the power to correct it. In other words, the DNA inspector is out to lunch, likely eating fast food which has no zinc.

Down syndrome babies are termed “floppy” babies at birth due to lack of muscular tone. They rarely cry and have a classic appearance that includes a domed forehead, flattened bridge of the nose. To prevent and treat Down’s syndrome you need 15 mg of zinc three times per day. Most Americans have low levels of this essential nutrient due to poor diet and lack of quality supplementation.

Protect your DNA Part I

Part of a visit to the doctor includes taking a family medical history which helps to inform the doctor whether the patient may be at increased risk of particular illnesses. Many patients and doctors alike, believe that medical or behavioral conditions that run in families are due to genetics.

It is important to understand that genes are much more than a material blueprint of who we are. Genes are expressed by our environment and our diet. This is called epigenetics. In other words, if someone has a strong family history of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer they are not destined to have those conditions just because it is in the genes. Indeed, these conditions run in the family because the families tend to have the same habits, live, work, and play in the same environments.

The Bible says very clearly, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27)”. This passage tells us very clearly that we are created in the image of God. God is a spiritual being, therefore our DNA, which contains the information of the image of God, must have a spiritual nature. DNA is not just composed of physical matter. It must have, by definition, a spiritual component that reflects our Creator, who is a spiritual being.

It should come as no surprise that there is a battle in the physical and spiritual realm to destroy our DNA. The Bible says, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel “ (Genesis 3:15). Soon after Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden God spoke directly to Satan in the previous passage, noting that there shall be hostility between Satan and the Seed of the Woman who is Jesus Christ.

Our enemy has known since the pronouncement from God that his seed (the anti-Christ) would be injured by Jesus. Therefore, Satan in his convoluted way of thinking devises and executes plans to damage the sprouting of seeds. His goal is to prevent or damage anyone associated with the Seed of the Woman, Jesus Christ, who ultimately will injure him. It is important to note that upon being born again we are included in the family of Jesus Christ.

The manifestation of our progeny is dependent on the sound replication of DNA. Because Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, our DNA has been corrupted with a sin code. Prior to the fall, Adam walked and talked with God freely in the Garden. After he sinned, Adam had direct access to God due to a corruption of the DNA. Remember, DNA has a spiritual component, therefore corrupted DNA blocks the ability to commune with God. When one is “reborn”, we are reconnected to our Creator.

Satan certainly does not want us to have direct access to God, therefore his goal is to destroy and/or corrupt our DNA. God, who knew this would occur, has given us repair mechanisms including proofreaders for our DNA to correct, protect, and defend our most precious commodity.

Our nutrition plays an extremely important role in the expression of genes. For example, nutritional manipulation can turn cancer genes “on” or “off”. We know, for example, that there is a 75-90% risk reduction of many cancers including breast, lung, and prostate cancer by having a vitamin D blood level of 50 ng/dL. Yes, it can be that simple. Get some some or simply supplement with vitamin D.

Additional nutrients that influence genes are magnesium, zinc, and B-vitamins. I will discuss the role in these vitamins in future blogs. In sum, one can alter one’s risk of degenerative diseases, including cancer at any age with proper diet and lifestyle changes. Genetics only loads the rifle, the environment pulls the trigger.

Brain and Gut: Part 2

All Diseases begin in the Gut, Hippocrates, 460-370 BC

The brain and the gut are essentially the same. By way of review:

  • 90% of the serotonin is located in the gut.
  • 50% of dopamine is located in the gut
  • All of the B vitamins are produced by good bacteria in the gut.

In a healthy gut, the B-vitamins are produced by the so-called “good bacteria”. The B- vitamins are important for energy production and nervous system function.

Acetylcholine is another important neurotransmitter. It is responsible for optimal brain function. It is made from choline which is a B-vitamin. It is responsible for brain speed among many other functions. Many kids and elderly are known to have low brain speed, especially those with attention deficit disorder and Alzheimer’s disease.

Many kids are inappropriately diagnosed with a synthetic amphetamine deficiency (Ritalin) and subsequently prescribed pharmaceutical medication. A child who has slow brain speed will exhibit the same symptoms as someone with acetylcholine deficiency including memory dysfunction, difficulty concentrating, and poor focus.

These kids should be given an aggressive trial of boosting their levels of good bacteria which produce every known neurotransmitter known to man. How can one naturally boost neurotransmitters? By eating fermented foods with each meal and/or taking a high quality probiotic such as Megapro which contains at least 50 billion microorganisms per dose.

On his death bed, the psychiatrist, known as the father of ADHD and pioneer of autism, Leon Eisenberg, admitted that ADHD is essentially a “fictitious disease,” which means that millions of young children today are being needlessly prescribed severe mind-altering drugs that will set them up for a life of drug addiction and failure. Pharmaceutical companies make money by inventing new drugs or creating new diseases already invented drugs can treat.

The neurotransmitters in the gut are extremely important for our physical and mental well-being. Serotonin, for example, is known as the “feel good” neurotransmitter. After eating a Thanksgiving meal one may feel a bit euphoric due to an increase in serotonin production from the amino acid (protein) tryptophan which makes melatonin also, causing us to feel tired.

Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that produces gut and brain power. You can recognize someone with a dopamine deficiency very easily. They are the folks who must have at least several cups of coffee or soda per day, have candy at their workstation (sugar craving), smoke, and are prone to addictions. These are the same people who are at high risk for Parkinson’s disease as well, a condition well-known to be associated with low dopamine levels.

If you fit any of these categories, then I urge you to change your habits by starting to eat a diet rich in fermented foods and strongly consider taking a high quality probiotic.

Brain and Gut: Part I

One of my primary approaches to healing involves addressing our gut.  When we speak of strengthening the physical body it is necessary first to focus on our core which incorporates the abdominal, back, and pelvic musculature. When we build a house, the foundation must be strong, otherwise it may fall easily by the slightest wind, rain, or storm.

Our gut is more than muscle, stomach, and intestinal tissue.

Upon conception (joining of the sperm and egg) the single cell undergoes multiple cell divisions as it grows and develops.  The cell is organized internally in such a way that there are areas within it which are destined to become specific tissues and organs. Specifically, the gut and the brain are derived from the same area inside the cell called the neural crest.  Due to the common origin of the brain and gut, the nutrients which feed both and the substances they produce are essentially the same.  In fact, one could argue that if you have a healthy gut, your brain will be healthy by default because THEY ARE THE SAME.

I see many patients who are depressed.  Pharmaceutical companies urge physicians to consider prescribing anti-depressant medications such as Prozac or Paxil which artificially increase “feel good” neurotransmitters (hormone-like substances) in the brain.  Common neurotransmitters include serotonin and dopamine.  It is a myth that these neurotransmitters exist only in the brain.

Many people use “dope” (street drugs) to artificially increase their dopamine and serotonin levels.  Athletes such as Lance Armstrong have been busted for “doping” with illegal substances for their performance enhancing effects.

Did you know?

  • 90% of the serotonin is located in the gut.
  • 50% of dopamine is located in the gut. Smoking marijuana and/or cigarettes increase dopamine directly only for a short time.  You may describe a drug addict as someone who “smokes dope”. Smokers and “weed-heads” are practically guaranteed to have low dopamine levels requiring them to self-medicate with Marlboro’s or so-called blunts (aka marijuana).
  • The brain and the gut come from the same cellular tissue at conception.
  • 85% of our immune system is located in our gut which houses 90% of the cells in our body. These cells are the probiotics, or live bacteria.  Only 10% of the cells in our body are uniquely human.  The others include bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi, among others.
  • When you talk to yourself, you are actually having a conversation with your gut flora, among others.  Are you having a conversation with good neighbors, or are you having an argument with members of the neighborhood in your gut that you wish would move out of your body?

The conversation with your gut might go like this:  Mmm, should I eat these chocolate bars that Ms. Smith just gave me or the salad and homemade delicious soup that my grandma prepared? What would your gut say?   It depends on who is present.  If you have an over-abundance of bad gut bacteria, parasites, or yeast, they will respond the loudest and that is to whom you will listen.

If the yeast are giving you a shout-out, they will tell you that you absolutely need that sugar.  Why? Because they cannot live without it. They survive on sugar and lack of oxygen.  They thrive and spread like Bay-Bay’s kids, spreading to different neighborhoods throughout the body and partying along the way.

They let you know they are not only present, but thriving by giving you signs and symptoms such as itchy feet (athlete’s foot), ringworm, bad breath, diaper rash and thrush as a baby, yellow nails, and many others.

Get to Know the Inhabitants of the Forest

One can think of our gut like a forest. If we unravel our gut from the mouth to the anus and lay it flat on the ground, it would cover the size of a tennis court. Microscopically the surface of our gut, however, is not flat like a tennis court. One can think of the surface of our gut as a beautiful thick grassy countryside with hills and valleys. Additionally, where the heart of digestion occurs, it has the appearance of a tall, thick forest covered by a mucous canopy of leaves blanketing the peaks of the forest.

In a diseased gut, the trees are all cut down eliminating the absorptive surface. The diseased gut looks more like Berber carpet than the thick, soft, shag carpet of the 1970s. In essence the diseased gut looks like a desert or flat, barren tennis court whereas a health gut has the appearance of the carpet in my home during the era of bell bottom pants and afros – ya dig?

Our gut has multiple purposes including, but not limited to absorption of nutrients and maintaining our immune system. In fact, 80% of our immune system is in our gut! That makes sense because invaders choose the path of least resistance such as an open window, in our case, our gut.

In the healthy gut, we have all kinds of friendly bacteria which function, among other things, to serve and protect. In many movies the forest is depicted as a place of refuge. Many movies depict groups of people retreating to the forest for protection when they are attacked. Our gut, when healthy has multiple booby traps, sharp shooters, hiding places, and the like to thwart an attack by enemies (bad bacteria, yeast, viruses, etc) who wish to takeover. This is biowarfare at its best.

The movie analogy reminds me of the special cities in the Bible, known as cities of refuge. Hebron is an example of such a city which allowed individuals a safe haven from prosecution. Biblical cities of Refuge are worth studying.

Let’s get to know those who work on our behalf in our gut. When God says in the Bible, “multiply and be fruitful”, I believe he is speaking also to the members of our gut, the good bacteria. It is our duty to get to know them and allow them to flourish by eating foods which are rich in good bacteria (aka probiotics) – fermented foods.

Lactobacilli

A large family of bacteria, which produce lactic acid. Most commonly known as lactobacilli acidophilus

  • They are the most common inhabitants of the stomach and intestines and the main protecting agents in those parts of the digestive system.
  • They maintain an acidic environment on mucous membranes, which suppress the growth of pathogenic microbes.
  • They are found in large numbers in human breast milk
  • They produce hydrogen peroxide which most homes have in the medicine cabinet to sanitize cuts, burns, and scrapes.

Bifidobacteria (I like to call them, “the Dr. B’s”)

  • Bifidum, B. breve, B. longum and B. infantis
  • A large group mostly located in the colon, vagina, and genital region.
  • No wonder because 90-98% of all bacteria living in the healthy gut of a baby are bifidobacteria
  • They produce proteins, B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, folic acid, B6, and B12), and are important for iron and calcium absorption.

Bacillus subtillis or soil bacteria

  • Discovered in WWII by German scientists to protect their soldiers from infectious diseases, specifically dysentery and typhoid.
  • It has strong immune stimulating properties and is particularly effective with allergies and autoimmune disorders.
  • Soil bacteria are not indigenous to the gut, they are transitional microbes, which do not colonize the gut, but go through it, doing a lot of work on the way.
  • We used to consume lots of soil bacteria when we drank water from wells and streams. These bacteria keep the gut clean. Waste management systems know this, why don’t you? They are put in the sewage holding tanks to detoxify rotting matter.
  • Bacillus brevis, Bacillus lichenformis, Bacillus cereus

Jesus is like the soil bacteria, He shed his blood for us to detoxify and cleanse us. Like soil bacteria, you have to consume it. It does not naturally reside in you unless you open the Living Word of God, Bible, and proclaim Him to be your Lord and Saviour.

He sent the Holy Spirit to indwell and inhabit us like the Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria (the Dr. Bs) which protect us, produce vitamins, and aid in the absorption of minerals.

Falling Leaves, Food, Antioxidants, and the Book of Revelation

Revelation 22:2 (NIV)

Down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

The title of the Book of Revelation came into usage from the first word of the book in Koine Greek: apokalypsis, meaning “unveiling” or “revelation”.  It is also known as the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ in reference to the opening line of the book.

The fall season is marked by colder temperatures and the changing colors of the leaves of trees.  Leaf pigment behind the autumn display of colors reveals much more than a dazzling array of colors to view for our pleasure.

Each fall our landscape is filled with a cornucopia of orange, yellow, pink, red, tan, and brown hues. Many tourists are attracted to the forests of Wisconsin and the surrounding states to view the display of beautiful fall foliage.

Trees shed their leaves to conserve energy through the winter.  To maintain a leaf, it requires energy. Given that there is less sunlight in the winter to supply the energy for maintenance, the deciduous trees release the extra baggage, slowing down their metabolism to hibernate for the winter.

Function of Autumnal Leaf Pigments

Carotenoid pigments are found abundantly in such vegetables as carrots and tomatoes. The carotenoids include lycopene and beta-carotene, known to be powerful antioxidants and cancer-fighting substances in humans.  The amount of carotenoids in one’s body is a good indicator of general health.  In my office I have a scanner that non-invasively measures one’s levels of carotenoids.  For a mere $20 one can know whether one is at risk for degenerative diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.

The yellow and orange carotenoid pigments are present in the leaf all year, they are simply masked by the abundance of green chlorophyll in the leaves.  As chlorophyll degrades in the fall, the carotenoid pigments degrade more slowly and persist, revealing their yellowish colors.

Tannins

Tannins cause the brown hues in leaves of some oaks and other trees in the autumn. The golden yellow or copper colors produced in some leaves, such as those of beech, result from the presence of tannins along with the yellow carotenoid pigments. Like the carotenoids, these compounds are always present, but only become visible as chlorophyll and carotenoids both disappear from leaves.

Tannins actually act as a defense mechanism in plants against pathogens, herbivores and hostile environmental conditions. Foods rich in tannins include the leaves of green tea and fruit juices. Tannins in fruit juices, such as those found in pomegranate juice, provide antioxidant and other health benefits to humans.

Anthocyanins

Anthocyanin pigments are responsible for the pink, red, and purple leaves of  many  woody plants. Anthocyanidins, formed from anthocyanins, are flavanoids: antioxidants that are beneficial to human health and possibly able to help prevent such diseases as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and cardiovascular disease.

Anthocyanidins are a subclass of flavanoids, a group of antioxidant compounds found in plants including fruits and vegetables. The variety of pink to purple colors in leaves is due to many, slightly different compounds that can be formed.

The Book of Revelation’s very name means to reveal —to unveil, to open to understanding what otherwise could not be comprehended.  In a similar fashion, we see the God’s glory through the unveiling of different nutrients that are readily available to us for our consumption which ultimately both nourishes and protects us.

Although you don’t see the numerous colors within the leaves in the height of the spring and summer, they are present. Like the colors of the leaves of the tree, Jesus is always with us.

After all the leaves fall off of the tree, the tree rests. It hibernates for the winter.  Once we shed all of personal  means of self-sufficiency and protection, when all of our leaves fall off,  we are assured that we will achieve true rest, namely, rest in the Lord (Hebrews 4:1-11).

Down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

The title of the Book of Revelation came into usage from the first word of the book in Koine Greek: apokalypsis, meaning “unveiling” or “revelation”.  It is also known as the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ in reference to the opening line of the book.

The fall season is marked by colder temperatures and the changing colors of the leaves of trees.  Leaf pigment behind the autumn display of colors reveals much more than a dazzling array of colors to view for our pleasure.

Each fall our landscape is filled with a cornucopia of orange, yellow, pink, red, tan, and brown hues. Many tourists are attracted to the forests of Wisconsin and the surrounding states to view the display of beautiful fall foliage.

Antioxidants Part II: Squash the Flames

Did you know that there are substances in our bodies called free radicals that cause disease and tissue damage?

Excessive free radical accumulation in our bodies is a known cause of many degenerative diseases such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes, to name a few.

As noted in the previous blog, “Antioxidants Part I”, free radicals can cause the equivalent of forest fires in our bodies. Antioxidants are the equivalent of the firemen who respond to the fire to put out the flames.
